Teaching Associate License
HISTORY
Adopted by the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission
(TSPC) in 1999.
MOTIVATION
A Teaching Associate License is issued only to an experienced
teaching assistant engaged in an intensive professional development
program for teaching assistants approved by TSPC. The programs
currently operating were developed specifically to recruit
members of underrepresented ethnic and racial groups to the
teaching profession. Both existing programs require the candidates
to be bilingual.
SUBJECT AREAS COVERED
All, but particularly encourage participation in preparation
for the ESOL or ESOL/Bilingual license endorsement.
WHO OPERATES
The license is issued by TSPC at the request of a candidate,
a school district, and an approved teacher preparation. The
institution providing the approved program and the district
are both required to provide supervision and intensive mentoring
of the candidate.
REQUIREMENTS TO ENTER
To be eligible for a Teaching Associate License, an applicant
must satisfy the following requirements
Be enrolled in a specified institutional program of undergraduate
education and professional teacher preparation approved by
TSPC and have completed 75% of the program required to qualify
for assignment as a full-time intern.
Complete one year as a full-time intern in an approved program
with the guidance of a mentor.
Obtain a passing score on a test of knowledge of US and Oregon
civil rights laws at the conclusion of a course or workshop
approved by TSPC.
Have three academic years of effectively full-time experience
as a teaching assistant assigned primarily to direct instruction
and related support.
Furnish fingerprints in the manner prescribed by TSPC.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Teaching Associate License is valid for two years and
is not renewable. During the life of the license the teacher
must complete the approved teacher preparation program and
complete all degree requirements, including passing required
basic skills and content tests, completion of two teacher work
samples demonstrating the ability to foster student learning
gains, and demonstration of all Initial Teaching License competencies
as required in Oregon Administrative Rule 584-017-0100.

Varies depending on the institutional program and prior college
credits held by the candidate.

Enrolling institution in cooperation with school district
mentor.
