MOTIVATION

To enable persons to provide professional services during and as a part of their program of study for any graduate program leading to teacher certification which includes an internship experience.

REQUIREMENTS TO ENTER PROGRAM

A baccalaureate degree in an appropriate field.

The individual applies for admission to a registered master's degree program that includes an internship and leads to certification.

The college applies to the state for issuance of the internship certificate for the individual's specific school assignment.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Following completion of at least one half of the degree program, the institution of higher education may recommend candidates judged to be ready to be placed in a teaching position in a local school district under appropriate supervision.

The length of classroom teaching is determined by the participating institution of higher education.

The internship is the culminating graduate program activity.

The certificate enables the individual to receive remuneration for the services provided, as well as to legalize the individual's employment.

The individual must complete an approved two clock-hour course in the identification and reporting of suspected child abuse or maltreatment and an approved two-hour workshop on school violence prevention and intervention.

NUMBER OF CREDIT HOURS TO COMPLETE

Determined by the college and approved by the State Education Department, but at least 30 semester hours for the award of a master's degree.

WHO EVALUATES

IHE and LEA, with oversight by the State Education Department.

LENGTH OF TIME

The internship certificate is valid for two years.
