MOTIVATION
To address the teacher shortage by enabling candidates who
have not completed a state-approved teacher education program
to establish eligibility for an initial teaching certificate.

REQUIREMENTS TO ENTER PROGRAM
Baccalaureate degree.
Applicants submit an application, fee, and official transcripts
of collegiate-level study for evaluation.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The applicant must fulfill academic, pedagogical, and examination
requirements for an initial certificate. These requirements
are comparable to those completed by graduates of registered
teacher preparation programs.
If there are deficiencies in the transcript, the applicant
is informed and must complete those requirements before a certificate
is issued.
Evaluation is conducted and certificates issued by the Office
of Teaching of the New York State Education Department.
The individual must complete an approved two clock-hour course
on the identification and reporting of suspected child abuse
or maltreatment and an approved two-hour workshop on school
violence prevention and intervention.
