TITLE
Limited License to Instruct (Mid-career Model)
HISTORY
Authorized for pilot to support the outplacement of retired
or released business and industry personnel.
MOTIVATION
Especially developed to assist the entry of mid-career changers
into teaching.
GRADE LEVELS AND/OR SUBJECT AREAS COVERED
Initially, secondary level Mathematics and Science, then all
levels and subject areas as needed.
WHO OPERATES
Collaborative among state, school district and university.
REQUIREMENTS TO ENTER PROGRAM
Base requirements include at least a bachelor's degree from
an accredited institution with a major or graduate degree in
the field of specialization to be taught (Foreign language,
Chemistry, Engineering, Robotics, Physics, Music).
Have, within the past 5 years, at least 2 years of occupational
experience in the field of specialization to be taught. Those
who will teach in the area of Foreign Language are exempted
from this requirement.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
A qualified individual must complete an Michigan Department
of Education (MDE) approved orientation (4-8 week) after which
he/she may be employed for one year with no additional academic
requirements.
During years 2-5, an individual may continue to be employed
on this restricted license track based on annual recommendation
of the employing district. If the person remains on this track,
he or she becomes unemployable under this license unless they
convert to a regular certificate track leading to Michigan's
initial Provisional certificate.
