TITLE
Alternative Route --- College Faculty Certification Option
HISTORY
Legislation enacted in 1996.
MOTIVATION
To allow entry into secondary school classrooms for persons
with experience teaching in colleges or universities.
GRADE LEVELS AND/OR SUBJECT AREAS COVERED
Secondary level (grades 8-12).
WHO OPERATES
State (EPSB).
REQUIREMENTS TO ENTER PROGRAM
To participate, a candidate must:
(a) Hold a master's or doctoral degree in the academic subject
area for which certification is sought; and
(b) Have a minimum of five years of full-time teaching experience
(or its equivalent of at least 90 semester credit hours taught)
in the academic subject area for which certification is sought,
in a regionally- or nationally-accredited IHE.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
College faculty members applying for certification:
(a) Shall, contingent upon meeting the requirements, be issued
a Statement of Eligibility, valid for five years;
(b) Shall, contingent upon confirmation of employment, be issued
a Provisional Teaching Certificate for participation in the
internship program;
(c) Shall, contingent upon successful completion of the teacher
internship program, be issued the Professional Certificate,
valid for an additional four years, and may renew the Professional
Certificate for additional five-year periods, contingent upon
three years of successful teaching experience or six semester
hours of additional graduate credit.
(d) The candidate shall be placed on the local district salary
schedule for the rank corresponding to the degree held.
NUMBER OF CREDIT HOURS TO COMPLETE

Internship committee assesses first year performance.
