Alternative Route --- Adjunct Instructor Certification Option

MOTIVATION
To allow entry into part-time K-12 teaching for persons with
training or expertise in specialty area(s).

REQUIREMENTS TO ENTER PROGRAM
Adjunct instructors
(a) Shall be "of good moral character" and be at least 18
years of age;
(b) If employed for departmentalized instruction in grades
7-12, shall hold a bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited
institution with an overall minimum grade point average (GPA)
of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale), and a major, minor, or area of concentration
in the subject to be taught with a minimum GPA of 2.5;
(c) If employed for vocational education, shall be a high
school graduate, and have at least four years of appropriate
occupational experience (or its equivalent, as approved by
the Division of Secondary Vocational Education) for the specialty
to be taught.
(d) If employed for teaching elementary or birth to primary,
shall hold a bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited
institution with an overall 2.5 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) with a
planned program in child development or a related area.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Adjunct instructors are those persons who
(a) Have training or experience in a specific subject area;
(b) Are employed in a part-time position on an annual contract
basis and shall not be eligible for continuing service status
or retirement provisions;
(c) May contract with local school boards for part-time services
on an hourly, daily, or other periodic basis;
(d) Shall not fill positions that will result in the displacement
of qualified teachers with regular certificates who are already
employed in the district;
(e) Shall be provided an orientation program developed and
implemented for adjunct instructors by the local school board;
and
(f) Shall be placed on the local district salary schedule
for the rank corresponding to the degree held by the teacher.
