REQUIREMENTS TO ENTER PROGRAM
The prospective intern must
- Hold a baccalaureate from an accredited institution with
a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
- Be admitted to a teacher intern program, which has been approved
by the state board of education.
- Meet the requirements of at least one of the board's secondary
endorsement areas.
- Possess a minimum of three years of post-baccalaureate work
experience (an authorized official at a college or university
with an approved teacher intern program will evaluate this
experience).
- Meet all non-academic requirements of the state, including
fingerprinting and state and national criminal investigation
background checks.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Teacher Intern must successfully complete
- An introductory program of at least 12 semester hours of
the teacher intern program prior to fall employment. The following
areas shall be integrated into the introductory teacher intern
program for delivery, and it is intended that the program shall
be developed further throughout the year of internship and
during the summer following the internship year
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Teacher Intern must successfully complete
- An introductory program of at least 12 semester hours of
the teacher intern program prior to fall employment. The following
areas shall be integrated into the introductory teacher intern
program for delivery, and it is intended that the program shall
be developed further throughout the year of internship and
during the summer following the internship year:
- Learning environment/classroom management;
- Instructional planning;
- Instructional strategies;
- Student learning;
- Diverse learners;
- Collaboration, ethics, and relationships;
- Assessment;
- Integrated field experience.
2. Four semester hours of a teacher intern seminar
during the teacher internship year. These seminars are intended
to provide continued support for the teacher intern and provide
an extension of the coursework taken during the first summer
prior to employment.
3. 12 additional semester hours during the summer
after the teacher intern year and in the following areas:
- Foundations, reflection, and professional development;
- Communication;
- Exceptional learner program;
- Preparation in the integration of reading strategies into
the content area;
- Computer technology related to instruction;
- An advanced study of items 1 through 7 listed above.
After completing these requirements, the Teacher Intern
may apply for issuance of an Initial License with the following
- Verification from a licensed evaluator that
the teacher intern served successfully as a teacher intern
for a minimum of 160 days.
- Verification from a licensed evaluator that
the teacher intern was deemed competent by means of a comprehensive
evaluation.
- Recommendation for an initial license by
a college or university offering an approved teacher intern
program. This recommendation includes the successful completion
of the second summer coursework consisting of 12 semester hours.
At the request of the state board of education, the teacher
intern shall provide to the board information regarding, but
not limited to, the teacher intern selection and preparation
programs, institutional support, local school district mentor,
and local school district support.
The teacher intern year will count as one of the years needed
to move from the initial license to the standard license if the
above conditions are met.
NUMBER OF CREDIT HOURS TO COMPLETE
24 semester hours.

Participating local school district and college or university
offering an approved teacher intern program.
