“Add-on Programs”
Florida also has offered what may qualify as a Class G program
for teachers to add subjects on to a Professional Certificate.
These “Add-on Programs” have been approved by the
Department of Education and Implemented either by school districts,
or the universities or a combination of these. Teachers who
complete an approved Add-on Program complete only the specialization
(content) requirements they are lacking as part of the Program.
Until July 1, 2002, completion of the approved add-on program
was required in combination with a passing score on the corresponding
subject area test to establish eligibility for the additional
coverage. Now, a passing score on the appropriate subject area
test is sufficient to establish eligibility for the coverages
that do not require master’s level training. A district
may offer the training content of the add-on program as a means
by which teachers can acquire the content knowledge and competencies
that must be demonstrated on the subject area exam to qualify
for the additional coverage.
