TITLE
D.C. Teaching Fellows
HISTORY
Initiated in Fall 2001.
MOTIVATION
The mayor and school superintendent called on 100 of the area's
most outstanding young and mid-career professionals to commit
two years to teach in D.C. Public Schools. These professionals
from a variety of careers, bring their experience, knowledge,
and record of achievement to positively impact the lives of
students.
GRADE LEVELS AND/OR SUBJECT AREA(S) COVERED
Elementary Education; Special Education (grades 1-6); English-as-a-Second
Language (ESL)/Bilingual Education(1-6); Secondary Mathematics
and Science.
WHO OPERATES
The New Teacher Project and D.C. Public
Schools.
REQUIREMENTS TO ENTER
Candidates must:
Possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution;
and
Submit an application, cover letter and resume.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The D.C. Public Schools and the city's administration are calling on the area's most outstanding professionals to become Fellows and commit at least two years to teaching in D.C. Public Schools. They want professionals from a variety of careers to bring their experience, knowledge, and record of achievement to the classroom, and positively impact the lives of students.
Fellows are trained at a comprehensive instructional summer institute, and are provided with an extensive support network to ensure success in the classroom.
Fellows receive financial incentives toward completion of their teacher certification and/or master's degree.
NUMBER OF CREDIT HOURS TO COMPLETE
24-32 semester credit hours.
WHO EVALUATES
D.C. Teacher Education and Certification Branch and local school
administrators.
LENGTH OF TIME
Two-year commitment to teach in a D.C. public school.
