HISTORY

Available for at least 20 years.

MOTIVATION

Currently used to provide native speakers of Spanish to teach secondary Spanish courses or bilingual classes.

Currently, Spanish and bilingual.

REQUIREMENTS TO ENTER

LEA must nominate the individual.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The individual is allowed to teach without having earned a bachelor's degree -- the only such program still in effect in California.

The individual must have completed 90 semester units of college study.

Holders of this credential are currently used to teach high school Spanish and bilingual classes.

The individual must pass the CBEST basic skills tests within the first year, in order to qualify for renewal.

The credential may be renewed if the individual completes an additional 6 semester units of coursework each year toward completion of an approved college teacher education program and a bachelor's degree (if the individual has no degree).

One year; renewable if the individual passes the CBEST and completes 6 semester units of coursework in an approved teacher education program.

OTHER

A state official said these individuals are largely recruited in Spain and Mexico, many teach for one year, do not complete the basic skills test or the required college coursework, and return to their home countries.
