Troops to Teachers

HISTORY

Ronald M. Stanfield, Coordinator Utah Transition to Teaching Alternative Program, is the Utah representative.

MOTIVATION

To relieve overall teacher shortages and to improve teacher quality by attracting mature, highly-experienced personnel to the classroom.

All subjects.

WHO OPERATES

Utah State Office of Education (USOE).

REQUIREMENTS TO ENTER

Candidates must be

Retired military personnel;

OR

Department of Defense civilian employees seeking a career change;

AND

Successfully complete a background clearance check.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The program has a referral and placement assistance program for candidates.

NUMBER OF CREDIT HOURS TO COMPLETE

Varies with each candidate; core program is 15 semester hours.

WHO EVALUATES

The Alternative Routes to Licensure Advisor and the principal.

LENGTH OF TIME

1-2 years.
