TITLE

Applied Technology Education / Alternative Preparation Program

HISTORY

Applied Technology Education was previously called Vocational-Technical Education. Initiated in 1985, with revisions in 2001. Additional revisions are scheduled for 2003.

MOTIVATION

To provide an avenue for individuals with experience in trade and industry to teach Applied Technology subjects in secondary schools.

GRADE LEVELS AND/OR SUBJECT AREA(S) COVERED

Secondary schools. Agriculture, business, marketing, trade, industry, technology, home economics, or health occupations.

WHO OPERATES

Utah Office of Education (USOE).

REQUIREMENTS TO ENTER

Verification of six (6) years of occupational experience in one of the required subjects, or four (4) years of postsecondary education and training in the content area, or passing a state-approved competency examination in the respective field.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Teachers holding a Level 1 license (valid for three years) with a concentration in Applied Technology Education/Alternative Preparation Program are limited to

Teaching only those courses found on the current list of program endorsements.

Teaching only those courses related to an occupational work experience.

Teachers holding a Level 1 license with an endorsement in teaching the handicapped are restricted to teaching in workshop centers for the handicapped and must have 18 months of work experience in business or industry related to the teaching assignment.

Teachers holding a Level 2 license (valid for five years) must meet the following requirements

Completion of 12 semester hours of professional development experiences. (Professional development experiences must have prior approval of the State Applied Technology Specialist.)

Coursework must be in the following areas

Principles, philosophy, organization, and coordination of Applied Technology Education;

Curriculum development and methods of teaching Applied Technology Education;

Classes/workshops sponsored by USOE.

NUMBER OF CREDIT HOURS TO COMPLETE

12-15; varies with program.

WHO EVALUATES

USOE Applied Technology Specialists.

LENGTH OF TIME

2-3 years.

The Applied Technology Education/Alternative Preparation Program is currently being redesigned to align with requirements for a Secondary Teaching license. The number of required hours will be increased to 15 and participants will be required to work with a trained mentor.
