The Alternative Certification Program (ACP) is a University-based program.  A person holding a bachelor's degree can obtain a teaching certificate while employed as a full-time teacher.

The Alternative Certification Program is designed for prospective public school teachers with degrees in disciplines other than education.  The program offers a fast, efficient path to the classroom as the teacher of record.

CERTIFICATION AREAS
  • · All-Level: Special Education
  • · EC-4: Bilingual Generalist, Elementary Generalist
  • · 4-8: Bilingual Generalist, Elementary Generalist, English/Language Arts/Reading
  • · 8-12: All (No Vocational Certifications)

Preassignment courses provide the academic foundation to enter the classroom in a specific track.

The assignment (internship) phase consists of 2 six-hour courses (one fall, one spring).  Internship and employment is at the discretion of the employing school district. Internship courses require a special fee.  A criminal records check will be conducted by employing districts; a felony conviction may be disqualifying.

Program prerequisites include admission to the program, a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution, overall GPA of 2.5, passing score on TASP or PPST and credit for college algebra (or higher) with a "C" or better.
