SUMMARY

The College of Education at the University of Texas Pan American received a $1.5 million Transition to Teaching grant called Project Supporting Teachers Across Rural Schools (Project STARS) from the U.S. Department of Education.

The primary objective of Project STARS is to assist high-need Local Education Agencies by addressing the teacher shortage in high need fields with the support of partnering entities.  The intended outcome is that the UTPA College of Education will recruit, prepare, certify, and place a total of 90 teachers in high-need public schools in an 11-county area of South Texas, including: Hidalgo, Willacy, Bee, Brooks, Jim Wells, Kleberg, Live Oak, San Patricio, De Witt, Goliad, and Karnes Counties.

A maximum $3,000 scholarship is available for individuals who hold a bachelor’s degree in any area outside the field of education and to paraprofessionals who are employed for at least two years in a public school and have completed two years of college coursework.

Individuals with a bachelor’s degree must apply and be accepted to UTPA and to the Alternative Certification Program in the College of Education.  Paraprofessionals must also apply and be accepted to UTPA and to the College of Education at UTPA ready to start their blocks.

The scholarship will pay for tuition and books for qualified individuals seeking teacher certification in any one of the following areas:
