Project STARS
SUMMARY
The College of Education at the University of Texas Pan American received
a $1.5 million Transition to Teaching grant called Project Supporting
Teachers Across Rural Schools (Project STARS) from the U.S. Department
of Education.
The primary objective of Project STARS is to assist high-need Local
Education Agencies by addressing the teacher shortage in high need fields
with the support of partnering entities. The intended outcome is that
the UTPA College of Education will recruit, prepare, certify, and place
a total of 90 teachers in high-need public schools in an 11-county area
of South Texas, including: Hidalgo, Willacy, Bee, Brooks, Jim Wells,
Kleberg, Live Oak, San Patricio, De Witt, Goliad, and Karnes Counties.
A maximum $3,000 scholarship is available for individuals who hold a
bachelor’s degree in any area outside the field of education and to paraprofessionals
who are employed for at least two years in a public school and have completed
two years of college coursework.
Individuals with a bachelor’s degree must apply and be accepted to UTPA
and to the Alternative Certification Program in the College of Education. Paraprofessionals
must also apply and be accepted to UTPA and to the College of Education
at UTPA ready to start their blocks.
The scholarship will pay for tuition and books for qualified individuals
seeking teacher certification in any one of the following areas:
- Bilingual Education
- Math
- Reading
- Science
- Special Education
- Technology
Eligibility criteria include:
- Cumulative GPA of 2.75
- Passing TASP/THEA scores
All Project STARS recipients must agree to teach a minimum of 3 years
in a high-need school district in any one of the 11 counties included
in the program.
